Understanding IP Addresses

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network. It serves two main functions: host identification and location addressing.

IPv4 vs IPv6

  • IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4): The existing standard that powers most of the web. It uses 32-bit addresses formatted as four decimal numbers (e.g., `192.168.1.1`).
